McConnell Blasts Pentagon’s Delayed Ukraine Aid
In a sharply worded op-ed featured in The Washington Post, the Kentucky Republican pushed back against the narrative that the American public has grown cold on Ukraine assistance, insisting that public opinion has consistently and firmly supported Kyiv's fight against Russian aggression.
McConnell highlighted decisive legislative action taken last year, noting that Republican-led armed services committees formally authorized $400 million annually for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative across a two-year window — a figure that appropriators went on to fully fund for fiscal year 2026 with sweeping, cross-party support.
Despite that overwhelming mandate, McConnell charged that the allocated funds "is now collecting dust" inside the Pentagon — stalled without explanation and unreachable through normal congressional oversight channels.
At the center of his accusations is the Defense Department's policy office, helmed by Undersecretary Elbridge Colby, which McConnell accused of leaving Senate appropriators entirely in the dark.
"When Senate appropriators have sought an explanation from the department's policy shop, led by Undersecretary Elbridge Colby, they've been stonewalled. Our colleagues on armed services have also expressed growing frustration with the Defense Department's inability to communicate," McConnell wrote.
Reframing the broader debate, McConnell rejected the characterization of Ukraine support as foreign charity, casting it instead as a strategic American "investment" with direct implications for national security.
The frozen assistance falls under the roughly $900 billion National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026, which earmarked $400 million for Ukraine in 2026 and an additional $400 million in 2027 through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
